Workshop 9 - 2.45pm
Steeking Knitting
Tutor: Marna Gilligan
Are you scared to snip your knitting? Don't be!
In this workshop you'll learn how to prepare and reinforce a steek, snip it, and pick up stitches along it for a button band or other edging. We'll explore the best (and worst) yarn choices for steeking and how to check the steekability of a yarn, and we'll try out several steek reinforcement methods. You'll finish the workshop brimming with steeking confidence and ready to take the scissors to everything you have ever knit.
HOMEWORK!
Please bring at least four tiny swatches to steek. They should be;
- 12 sts by 16 rows, it in stocking stitch.
- DK or aran-weight yarn
- Knit in a non-superwash wool
We'll be trying out several reinforcement methods on these - and cutting them all up! You'll also need a crochet hook 2 sizes smaller than the needles you knit the swatch on, and small pair of sharp scissors.
If you're knitting - or contemplating - something that needs a steek please bring the pattern or project along as well, and we can discuss the best way to approach the steek.
